South Turkana Cultural Expedition
South Turkana sits in Kenya's far northern rift, a dry, dramatic landscape of old volcanic cones and desert scrub bordering the Lake Turkana basin — home to the world's largest permanent desert lake, sometimes called the Jade Sea, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
This trip is built for travelers who want quiet, space, and real cultural connection, more than another game drive. Across 8 days you'll cross dramatic volcanic ground, meet Turkana families living much as they have for generations, and reach one of the most remote corners of Kenya — a true off the beaten path safari for travelers who want to go further than the classic parks.
Day-by-Day Itinerary
A flexible outline — every itinerary is tailored around your dates and interests.
Journey North
Begin the journey into the Turkana basin, either flying in by charter or driving overland from Nairobi. Watch the landscape shift from Kenya's green highlands to dry, open desert as you head north. This is a full transfer day — settle in at camp by evening, ready for the days ahead.
Field Note
Temperatures in South Turkana run high year-round. Sun protection, a hat, and steady water matter more on this route than almost anywhere else in Kenya.
South Turkana Volcanic Landscapes
Spend a full day exploring the cinder cones and old lava fields that make this part of Kenya look like nowhere else in the country. These volcanic formations were shaped by eruptions thousands of years ago, leaving behind black rock, ash cones, and wide open plains found in only a handful of places on Earth. Your guide will stop often for photos and to explain how this dry, volcanic land shapes the plants, animals, and people who call it home.
Cultural Immersion with Turkana Communities
Meet members of the Turkana community, one of Kenya's largest and proudest herding groups, in a guided visit to a local settlement. Learn how families here raise goats, camels, and cattle in one of the driest, most demanding environments in the country, and see traditional beadwork, homes, and daily routines shaped by generations of life on this land. This is a respectful, guided cultural exchange, not a staged show, and it's one of the most memorable parts of any South Turkana safari.
Lake Basin Excursion
Head toward the Lake Turkana basin, home to the world's largest permanent desert lake, sometimes called the Jade Sea for its striking blue-green color. Also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the lake's shores are lined with volcanic rock and desert scrub, with a chance to spot Nile crocodile along the water's edge.
Second Cultural & Landscape Day
Spend another day moving between dramatic volcanic scenery and time with local Turkana families, at a slower pace that matches the heat and remoteness of this part of Kenya. This flexible day lets your guide adjust the plan — more time at a settlement, another stop at a striking rock formation, or rest during the hottest hours.
Rest Day & Local Market Visit
Spend a lighter, slower day visiting a local market town, where Turkana families come to trade animals, food, and goods, with rest time built in to match the heat and remoteness of the region. It's a simple, honest look at daily life in the far north, far from any city.
Begin Return South
Begin the journey back south, either by charter flight or overland, breaking up the return trip with a stop at a scenic viewpoint along the way — a chance to look back over the ground you've covered before rejoining more familiar territory.
Arrival Back & Departure Transfer
Complete the journey back to Nairobi, or transfer directly to your connecting international flight. Your guide handles the logistics so this final day is as easy as the rest of the trip.
